  • Description
    The Prudence landfill is located along the western bank of the Pantano Wash north of 22nd Street. This landfill was used for the disposal of municipal solid waste. Today the City monitors twenty perimeter shallow landfill gas probes, three groundwater monitoring wells, and three deep nested soil vapor wells surrounding the landfill. In addition, the City operates a landfill gas extraction system to prevent the migration of methane to neighboring properties. The landfill is owned and maintained by the City of Tucson.
  • Additional Info
    Low concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) such as tetrachloroethene (PCE), have been detected in the groundwater, but at concentrations below their respective regulatory standard.

Status Updates

  • January, April, July, & October
    The City conducts quarterly landfill gas monitoring at perimeter probes during these months every year to monitor for methane migration at the property boundary.
  • October-December
    The City is scheduled to conduct an annual closed landfill inspection. A report will be prepared documenting the site conditions.
  • May 2013
    The City of Tucson issued a notice to proceed for a consulting firm to upgrade gas wells and vaults at Prudence Landfill. The cages have been damaged or destroyed and are in need of repair. The notice to proceed is available in the Reports/Attachments section of this website.
  • July 19, 2010
    The City completed the 2009 Groundwater, Soil Vapor, and Landfill Gas Monitoring report. This report is available in the report/attachment section of this website.
  • 2001-2004
    The City installed three groundwater and one deep soil vapor monitoring wells and began routine monitoring.
  • 1995-1998
    The City installed shallow landfill gas monitor probes to monitor methane concentrations between the landfill and nearby businesses and began routine monitoring.
  • June 1995
    The City installed a landfill gas extraction system to prevent migration of methane from the property to nearby businesses and residences. The system is still in operation today.

    The City of Tucson - Environmental Services owns and maintains fifteen closed regulated and non-regulated landfills.
